About The Nutcracker:
It seems like The Nutcracker has always been a part of the holiday season in America, however, its introduction to American ballet enthusiasts wasn’t very long ago. This beloved holiday tradition started in San Francisco on Christmas Eve of 1944 at the War Memorial Opera House. That very evening The Nutcracker became an American holiday standard, so much so that nowadays it seems like it’s always been.

This Event in San Francisco is not to be missed. See The Nutcracker in the venue where the beloved American institution was established. While hugely popular, the American version of The Nutcracker is a far cry from its original performance at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, Russia.

The December 18, 1892 production of the two-act ballet was choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. However, the name that will forever remain synonymous with The Nutcracker is Pytor Ilych Tchaikovsky for his score of the work. Even those who have never seen this ballet recognize parts of the score, particularly The Nutcracker Suite, more than likely due to its use in Disney’s Fantasia.

The original production was not received well, mainly due to the choreography. The rest, as they say, is history. The American version, however, is much-loved by audiences of all ages and is, in some families, a holiday tradition that is not to be missed.

Seeing the venue for this Event in San Francisco, the War Memorial Opera House, is worth the price of admission. This beautiful old concert hall’s opening night was in 1932, and it was named in honor our Armed Service members who served in WWI. The serene Roman Doric architecture provides an enchanted setting to see The Nutcracker and other of the world’s great works.
