Golden Gate Park is a beautiful urban greenspace located right in the heart of San Francisco.
About Golden Gate Park:
Like many cities around the country in the mid to late 19th century, San Francisco began planning an urban park. Inspired by New York’s Central Park, which was already under development, the city broke ground on Golden Gate Park in the 1860s.
Opened in 1870, this San Francisco Attraction, which at 1,017 acres is 20% larger than Central Park, features oceanfront and Ocean Beach.
Every year about 13 million people visit Golden Gate Park to attend musical performances at the Bandshell, visit the DeYoung Art Museum or The Academy of Sciences where exhibits include reptiles and amphibians, astronomy and prehistoric life among others.
The Japanese Tea Garden, which is the oldest Japanese garden in the United States, is a favorite of guests. The Bison Paddock has housed these magnificent creatures since 1899 as part of conservation efforts and the live there still there today.
At Spreckles Lake you can watch model radio controlled boats plying the waters while you stroll through this San Francisco Attraction. If you prefer the real thing, head over to Stow Lake to rent a row boat or a pedal boat and spend the afternoon on the water.
If you just want to unwind, simply spread a blanket on one of the grassy fields or head to the beach and catch up on your reading. Whatever you decide to do, you’re sure to love Golden Gate Park as much as the locals do.
